Advocates of Responsible Urban Policy

In 1989, Advocates' members were New Orleans citizens, generally dissatisfied with local civic, political and governmental leadership. We established Advocates of Responsible Urban Policy to conduct research and analysis of significant local government policy questions. We disseminate the research results and publish our recommendations.

One significant project involved the New Orleans City Charter revisions. We published research and analysis on the Internet, explaining the City Charter Amendments. We reviewed the changes and summarized those changes in Charter Amendment Highlights . We published on the Internet a "redline"version of each of the City Charter revisions, showing what changed and what remained. Also, we provided a list of who worked on the Charter Revision Committee and what the Mayor thought about the proposed changes Charter Revision Committee.

Our first news letter published on the Internet, Advocates Voice, Vol. 7, No. 1, examined the July 15, 1995 City and School Board bond referenda and recommended in favor of all three propositions. The election results were satisfying.

We live in New Orleans -- we work in New Orleans -- we own property in New Orleans -- we love New Orleans -- and we're not leaving our City. We will do whatever it takes to improve New Orleans and the quality of all of our lives.

Advocates is supported by dues and subscriptions paid by our members and gifts from supporters. We enhance urban life in New Orleans through thoughtful, non-partisan analysis of local governmental practices, programs and policies.
